Nunes at the double

Four-year-old debutant ICE COLD is at the top of the handicaps in Race One of tomorrow's Sunrise-6 but appears advanced enough to take care of a group of moderate maidens in the 1000 metres round sprint.

The Blue Pepsi Lodge - Cauchee colt has been on the exercise track consistently since mid July and covered 800 metres flat in 49.1 on August 19, the fastest split for the distance on the day. Earlier on August 13, he did 47.2x1:03.1 over 1000 metres straight and barring any mishaps should provide another win for title-chasing trainer Anthony Nunes.

Nunes should complete a quick double with KALAHARI in Race Two. The 1500-metre race for three-year-old maidens has attracted eight starters and KALAHARI, who was beaten into third on debut (going 1300m) on August 4 has trained extremely well ahead of her second outing.

In her first run, she led for 1000 metres before weakening but still finished just three and a half lengths behind impressive winner LORD ASHTON. Her breeding suggests that she will be very comfortable in this easier pace and Dick Cardenas should notch his 45th win of the season.

Seeking Fourth Win

The third race is over 1820 metres for $250,000 claimers and the very fit CHIEF PROSPECT will be seeking his fourth win in a row. He will have a tough task, however, as he faces the down in class CUP O TEA. The five year-old mare is back with the connections (trainer Junior Small and owner Oshaun Connection) for which she posted her last two wins in January and at this level her superior pace should be too much for her rivals.

Race Four will prove to be a very knotty affair with at least four of the nine starters, DIFERENTGENERATION, HOLOGRAM SHADOW, ZACKONTHEATTACK and my selection, FLYING MACHINE, all having outstanding chances. The latter finished at the back of the field among $550,000 claimers on August 11 but still clocked 1:16.1 for 1200 metres so her fitness is not in doubt.

It should be noted that she last won over tomorrow's distance in March clocking 1:27.2 and a reproduction of that effort will be more than good enough to topple this field.
