Two more TT bronze medals for Jamaica
Jamaica closed the Caribbean Region Mini and Pre-Cadet Table Tennis Championships with three silver and five bronze medals. On the last day of the tournament which was played in the Dominican Republic, Azizi Johnson and Tsenaye Lewis put Jamaica in the medal round of their respective Under-11 singles.
Johnson breezed past Bruce Dillon of Trinidad and Tobago and Puerto Rican Enrique Rios to reach the semis, but his path to the final was blocked by left-handed Ramon Vila of the Dominican Republic, 4-11, 8-11, 5-11. In like manner, Lewis bashed Danelys Cruz of Puerto Rico and Carolina Sosa of the host team to reach the semis.
There she lost 5-11, 6-11, 7-11 to Puerto Rico's Liara Rivera, who was a thorn in the side of the Jamaicans. Rivera had earlier eliminated Lewis' teammates Jada Allwood and Le-Anna Smith.
The pickings were slim in the Under-13 singles as Andre Richardson reached the main draw and but lost early to eventual runner-up Jose Nieves. In the corresponding girls event, Gianna Lewis, Selena Khwalsingh, Olivia Petrekin and Kelsey Davidson all reached the main draw. Lewis was the only one to advance further but her progress was ended in the quarter-finals by Puerto Rican Daymar Castro.
