Jamaica Tallawahs crash out of CPL

Jamaica Tallawahs captain Andre Russell is disappointed with his team's bowling after crashing out of the Hero Caribbean Premier League by a two-wicket defeat to the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots at Providence, Georgetown, Guyana, last night.

"Obviously, we are disappointed. The way we batted, we didn't top it off with good bowling," Russell said. "We didn't stand out the way we're supposed to in the bowling - a lot of bad deliveries - and we have to refocus and do something different next year."

Patriots skipper Chris Gayle won the toss and sent his former team in to bat. Glenn Phillips top-scored with 103, including nine fours and six sixes, before being bowled by Ben Cutting. Ross Taylor also contributed 33 runs to the Tallawahs' total of 191 for five off their 20 overs.

Cutting was the Patriots' best bowler, taking two for 45 runs.

Needing 192 for victory, Patriots paced themselves through their innings, but it was not initially an easy task hitting their target. Anton Devcich struck a composed half century, including five fours and two sixes, before being dismissed by the bowling of Oshane Thomas, three for 43, and a nervy catch by wicketkeeper Glenn Phillips.

Russell took three big catches near the boundary to keep his side in the game, but that was all scuppered in the final over when Rovman Powell delivered four wide balls, as the Patriots brought the chase down to five runs needed from three balls. Cutting then smashed a big six to put the Tallawahs out of the competition, with one ball remaining.
