'Next year'll be different' - Blagrove upbeat about CUMI Come Run performance

Tricia Martin crosses the line in 54:43.00 minutes to win the Women’s 10k event of the Committee for the Upliftment of the Mentally Ill (CUMI) Come Run 10K Run and 5K Walk/Run at the Tryall Golf Club on Saturday morning.

Despite missing out on the opportunity to make it five in a row, Kalene Blagrove, four-time 10K winner of the Committee for the Upliftment of the Mentally Ill (CUMI) Come Run 10K Run and 5K Walk/Run, said she was not disappointed with her performance as she was about sixty per cent fit when she took on the hilly course at the Tryall Golf Club on Saturday morning.

The 10K female race was won by Tricia Martin of JamDammers Running Club in 54:43.00 minutes, ahead of Alison Sutherland (54:57.00) of Rainforest Seafoods, and Blagrove (55:46.00) of Pacers Running Club.

"I wouldn't say I'm disappointed. I know I was not a hundred per cent because I'm carrying a knee injury. So I came just to run and hope that I could have got a win. Unfortunately, I came a little bit late, two minutes before the race started, so that kind of threw off my game plan because I went out too hard and I suffered ... I had to settle for the third," said Blagrove.

HOPING TO REBOUND

"Hopefully, next year I can rebound, get myself back in shape and come back again. As you can see, the time was not that impressive, but a win is a win," she said about Martin's performance.

Martin, who was running at CUMI for the first time, said the experience was great, added to the feeling of winning her first 10K back from surgery.

"Yes, I had a really good race. I actually had surgery (abdominal) in March, so I have been working my way back. I wanted to come out and run my first 10K (after surgery) at CUMI with some friends I run with from the JamDammers Running Club. I decided I was just going to run my best 10K, so whatever the result was, that's what it would be. My focus was on the effort," said Martin.
