Ja clinch series

Jamaica's Sunshine Girls clinched the Three-Test Lasco Sunshine Netball Series against England at the National Indoor Sports Centre last night with an impressive 58-39 victory in Game Two.

Head coach Marvette Anderson was extremely pleased with the win.

"I think the ladies did exceptionally well defensively. We have been working on our defence, our concentration, and our decision making, and you saw on the court things that we have been practising for the past couple of months, and I am happy to see that we were able to execute that today. It's a job well done," Anderson said. Jamaica won Game One 55-43 on Thursday.

Led by captain and goalshooter Jhaniele Fowler and defender Shemera Sterling, the Sunshine Girls dominated the first quarter to take a 15-11 lead at the end of the stanza.

GIRLS IMPRESSIVE

The local netballers were even more impressive in the second period as their defensive unit, which includes Sterling, Stacian Facey, and Vangelee Williams, shut down the England attackers, holding them to just eight goals in the quarter, while scoring 14 for a 29-19 lead at the half. Fowler was very impressive for the Jamaicans as she scored 10 of the team's 14 goals.

The Sunshine Girls, who are ranked fourth in the world, two places below England, matched their opponents goal for goal in the third period as they ended the quarter with a 42-33 lead.

Jamaica stepped up the tempo in the fourth quarter as they led by as many as 18 goals with five minutes remaining. With the victory secured, head coach Marvette Anderson replaced Fowler with Shantal Slater, much to the delight of the Jamaican supporters, who gave the ace shooter a thunderous standing ovation as she exited the court.

Fowler topscored for Jamaica with an excellent 45 goals from 47 attempts. She received support from goal attack Shaniece Beckford, who added nine from 12.

Kadeen Corbin was the leading scorer for England with 24 goals from 31 attempts.

The final match in the series will be played tomorrow.
