It's a Cornwall, JC Champions Cup final

Cornwall College turned in a gusty second-half performance to defeat former champions St George's College 2-0 and book their spot in this year's final of the ISSA/Champions Cup competition at Sabina Park last evening. The Dr Dean Weatherly-coached Cornwall who were beaten by Wolmer's Boys in the 2016 final, got their goals from Arden Jokombo in the 62nd minute and Shavon McDonald in the 68th.

Cornwall will meet Jamaica College in the final. The Andrew Peart-coached boys were too strong for St Elizabeth Technical and ran out easy 4-0 winners in the semi-final.

The speedy and skilful Jokombo who tormented the St George's defenders throughout the game, gave his team the lead when he fired home from point blank range. Cornwall College's lead was doubled eight minutes later as McDonald fired home from the penalty spot. This after the ball was handled inside the 18 yards box by a St George's player. The Light Blues looked deflated after the second goal as they failed to create any meaningful scoring chances against a very organised Cornwall defence.

Late in the McDonald went close to netting his team's third goal, but his volley went high over the crossbar.

Happy with result

Weatherly said he was very happy with his team's performance and they are now looking forward to the final.

"It is a good feeling to be back in the final because it is hard work now bearing fruit," said Weatherly." We have been preparing for these games from in the summer and it is nice to see that we are now reaping the spoils," he said.

He added: "In the first half we were a bit sluggish but in the second half we did what we had to do and win the game."

Meanwhile, Neville Bell, coach of St George's, said his team played well despite the defeat.

Congrats to Cornwall College ... I don't think we played badly but we just never did enough in front of their goal. ... It was the first time that we are losing all season and so I am a little disappointed," Bell said.
