Spurs hunt sixth straight win

Manchester Spurs will be looking to fine-tune their attacking game for a sixth straight win, when they face St. James Sharpes in the opening game of Netball Jamaica's opening fixture of two, in the Berger Elite League, at the Leila Robinson Courts today beginning at 6:30 p.m.

In the second match, defending champions Kingston Hummingbirds will face St Catherine Racers at 7:45 p.m.

The Spurs are leading the championship with a perfect five wins after laying down impressive performances. Despite romping to a commanding 58-38 victory over St Catherine Racers on Saturday, head coach Connie Francis wants better from her players.

"How we attacked the ball coming from the back, coming right through the court, and hitting the attack at times, I think that the movements weren't timely and the passes were very soft. We really need to put some speed on it," analysed Francis. "So really, it's just the passing and, later down in the game, our shooting."

Gezelle Allison, Anna-Kay Griffiths and Nicole Dixon, all good shooters, lead the attack for a balanced Manchester Spurs team, with Khadija Williams in mid-court and captain Tracey-Ann Robinson defending alongside Shannika Johnson.

They are expected to beat St. James Sharpes, which have lost all but one of six matches to be positioned bottom of the table on three points.

With four of the six teams advancing to the semis, St James Sharpes face an uphill battle.

They are nowhere near as talented at their opponents, but the Sharpes will look to stay competitive through main shooter Kestina Sturridge, Connique Moore, the versatile Sasha Dixon and key defender, Kera Christie.

The second match appears less lopsided, though Kingston Hummingbirds are favoured to register their fifth win in six tries, against never-say-die St Catherine Racers.
