Chung-Fah to be celebrated tomorrow

A Memorial service for late football coach extraordinaire Winston Chung-Fah will be held at the Holy Trinity Cathedral, North Street, Kingston, this Saturday, December 15, beginning at 10 a.m.

Chung-Fah, former national technical director and men's senior team coach, died on November 8 in Florida. He was 78 years old.

After the service, there will be celebrations of his life at the St George's College football field, North Street, beginning at 1 p.m. This will include a football match between Boys' Town and Santos, teams coached by the late patriot, and also Rae Town and Browns Town's Under-13 teams.

Born in Clarendon in 1964, Chung-Fah went on to coach at Vere Technical for four years, helping the team to win the daCosta Cup and the Olivier Shield titles. He also found success at Clarendon College, moulding one of Jamaica's greatest schoolboy teams. Clarendon College, which won both the daCosta Cup and the Olivier Shield in 1977 and 1978, repeated their success in 2018. The football legend was also the first coach of the Reggae Girlz.

He also founded Santos Football Club, which expanded opportunities to underprivileged inner-city players. Chung-Fah became technical director for The Cayman Islands Football Association in 1989. In 1991, he returned to Jamaica, serving as the Jamaica Football Federation's technical director for two years and leading the national team to the Shell Caribbean Cup.

Chung-Fah received the national Order of Distinction, Commander Class, in 2013 and also FIFA's Order of Merit.
