KC's hurdlers star at GC Foster

Shaquena Foote of Petersfield High wins her Class One 400 metres heat in a personal best 52.26 seconds at the Wint/McKenley Classics held at Calabar High yesterday. Foote had earlier topped the 400m hurdles in 58.17 seconds.

Kingston College's (KC) hurdlers made a strong statement in their first full competition on the track this season at yesterday's Central Hurdles and Relays meet at G.C. Foster College with Rayon Campbell in Class Two and Romel Plummer in Class One leading the way with record runs in the 400m hurdlers.

Competing in the Class Two 400m hurdles, Campbell stopped the clock at 54.81 seconds to erase the 2016 previous meet record of 55.19. Jade Brown, also of KC, was second in 55.83, while Robert Graham of Jamaica College (JC) was third in 56.29.

Inspired by his teammate's run, Plummer came out in a no-nonsense mood in the Class One event, turning back last year's Boys' Champs winner Rovane Williams of Rhodes Hall. He won in an impressive 52.56 seconds to smash the 2016 meet record of 53.53. Williams clocked 54.20 while Excelsior High's Devontie Archer ended third overall in 54.56.

KC also dominated the sprint hurdles. Class One long jumper Wayne Pinnock showed his versatility by winning the 110m hurdles in 14.01 seconds to lead a KC sweep of the top three spots in the event. Akeem Cargill, 14.32, and Tajay Houston (14.83) were second and third, respectively.

KC then took the top two places in the Class Three 100m hurdles. Rajohn Gray produced a record 13.82 seconds run to win ahead of Amonti Wray (14.04). Jayden Johnson of JC was third in 14.09.

 

JC RULED SUPREME

 

JC ruled supreme in the Class Two 110m hurdles, with Jaheem Stern producing a record run of 13.81 to get the better of teammate Neil Matthew Sutherland (13.84) and Excelsior High's Shawn Simmonds, 14.18.

St Jago High's Crystal Morrison topped the Class Two 100m hurdles in 13.59. Second went to Salieca Myles of Edwin Alken in 14.01.

Danae Nembhard and Kayla-Gay Clarke, both of St Jago, were one-two in the Class Three 80m hurdles. Nembhard won in 11.72 ahead of Clarke (11.75) and Atalliah Wallace of Holmwood, 11.83.

In the girls' 400m hurdles, Colisha Taylor of Holmwood and Lashanna Graham of Edwin Allen wrote their names in the record books. Taylor erased her one-year-old record in the Class Two event, winning in 1:00.69 to beat her previous mark of 1:00.94. Keneisha Garwood of Edwin Allen was second in 1:06.31.

Graham scored a big win in the Class One 400m hurdles, clocking 59.01 seconds to erase the old record of 59.24.
