I will miss Champs - Ingram

Edwin Allen’s Aneisha Ingram was very emotional as she ended her Champs career with a gold-medal run in the 2000m Steeplechase at the ISSA/Gracekennedy Boys and Girls Athletics Championships at the National Stadium on Thursday night.

The 18-year-old Ingram won the event quite comfortably in 7:11.17 seconds, finishing ahead of Holmwood’s Megan Thompson, who clocked 7:20.41 for second and Hydel’s Kebarna McIntrye 7:23.60 in third.

The soft-spoken Ingram, who was recording her second consecutive win in the event, said that she felt very sad that her high school track career is now over.

“I am not really happy that it is my last year and that I won’t be able to do it again new year,” said Ingram.

“High school is fun, my team-mates are fun, and track is fun, overall, in high school,” she said. “I will surely miss it, but I am just happy that I finished my high school career with this gold medal.”

“I feel really happy because I notice for the last few years that the steeplechase champion doesn’t defend their title.

It is like every year a new champion comes along, and so I am glad that I broke that trend,” Ingram said.

Ingram, who hails from the parish of St Ann, added that the win served as a big motivator for her future efforts.

“This is really a confidence booster for me, as I move on to the next phase of my career, and I just hope to continue doing good things and be the best that I can be in my life,” said Ingram.

“I am also really happy that I won knowing that this is my last year competing at Champs. My team was depending on me, and I didn’t want to let them down, and so I just went out and did my best to score maximum points,” she said.
