The annual ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships is arguably the greatest staging ground for high school athletes in the world. Here, we see the debut performances of several of our renowned athletes. The Sunday Gleaner interviewed several of these participants and posed the question, “What has been your favourite Champs experience?”

Jeremy Farr, Wolmer’s Boys’ School

That would have to be my second-year class 2 champs experience when I won the hurdles double, 400-metre hurdles and the 110-metre hurdles. That was my first medal at champs ever, so I was ecstatic at the end and I am hoping to repeat it this year.

Llori Sharpe, St Andrew High School for Girls

I would have to say the camaraderie that is among the girls at St Andrew High. It is a very nice feeling to be surrounded by people who are just for a common goal: to represent the school at the championships. It is good to be a part of the St Andrew High family.

Antonio Phillips, Calabar High School

My favourite Champs experience was last year when I ran the 200m and came fifth in the semis. It was my favourite experience because it was the first time I made the Calabar Champs team.

Sharvis Simmonds, Excelsior High School

My favourite Champs experience was back in 2017 when I did my first 200 metres at Champs. I ran a personal best and made the semis but I did not make the finals, but it was an achievement. It was a great opportunity because I don’t do the 200s much and it was a big event.

Roshaun Rowe, Kingston College

My favourite Champs experience was the 4 by 400m with (Akeem) Bloomfield and (Christopher) Taylor because they are the fastest people in 4 by 400m in Champs history. You are going to see the results at the end of the Championships.

Kavia Francis, Holmwood Technical High School

My favourite Champs experience was when I got a bronze medal in 2017 because it was my first Champs medal. My expectations are to go out there and do my best and ensure that my team comes out on top, and I pray to God that we do our best.

Antonio Watson, Petersfield High School

My favourite Champs experience was last year when we won the 4 by 400. It was a great feeling knowing that we ended the Championship on a high. You can expect the normal Antonio Watson to round out the year having fun, competing at his best and winning.
