Texas Tech coach hunting sprinters

Texas Tech’s sprint coach Zach Glavash says his institution is aiming to recruit the island’s top junior sprinters as they look to boost their track and field programme for next season.

Glavash told The Sunday Gleaner that Jamaica is blessed with a lot of talented sprinters, so that is the reason why they decided to attend this year’s ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Championships.

“I am just looking for the best talent that is available. Champs is, in my opinion, the best meet in the world,” said Glavash.

“The talent level here is incredible! They have some great coaches, and you come here and you see kids that are going to be the best at the next level,” he said.

“I am not saying college, I am saying the Olympics and the IAAF World Championships,” Glavash said.

GREAT RELATIONSHIP

Jamaica’s World Championships representative, Senoj-Jay Givans, and Rushelle Burton are among some of the country’s athletes that Glavash has coached in the past.

He noted that he has had a great working relationship with Jamaican athletes in the past, and so he is confident that he will be successful in his recruitment drive.

“We want sprinters. Kids that can come into our school and make an immediate impact at our conference and at our national championships,” said Glavash.

“Our school is number one on the men’s side in the NCAA in the United States, and we have a lot of great kids and an amazing indoor facility that cost over US$50 million,” he said.

“We will be making contact with a number of coaches, and so we will see what happens from there,” he said.
