Food For The Poor launches 5k walk/run

Philanthropic organisation Food For The Poor launched its 5th 5K walk/run on Tuesday at the Spanish Court Hotel. The run is expected to be held on Sunday, May 19.

Speaking at the launch, Minister of Health Dr Christopher Tufton commended the organisation for its years of philanthropic work in Jamaica and on the assistance that it has continuously given to persons in need.

“Food For The Poor represents so much that should be admired within the society, and indeed as part of humanity. Their work deserves recognition. Food For The Poor can be declared undisputedly as one of the significant partners of public health in Jamaica, and I want to share my gratitude for their efforts over the years,” Tufton said.

“Food For The Poor, over its 35-year history in Jamaica, has built over 25,000 housing units, which gives me goosebumps when I think about it and the homes we have built for the less fortunate in Jamaica,” explained Andrew Mahfood, chairman of Food For The Poor Jamaica.

“I have to thank our donors from overseas, in Canada, America, Europe and especially Jamaica, because without them there would be no Food For The Poor. It just shows the kind-heartedness of many people around the world,” added Mahfood.

“Over 500 lives have been improved. This would not have been possible without the Food For The Poor team members and donors from across the world, who have been on board to positively impact the lives of persons in need. Ultimately, there have been over 40 sponsors who assist in making this a reality, with main sponsors such as Wisynco, National, Rainforest Foods, Ambulance, Emancipation Park, St Johns Ambulance and Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation,” Mahfood added.

This year, Stacey Halsall-Peart, chief operating officer of Advanced Integrated Systems Limited, with her dedication to humanitarianism, has been named run ambassador for the Food For The Poor Run.
