RSPL refs to be paid – Wint

Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) General Secretary Dalton Wint says outstanding fees of over $4million owed to match officials for last season’s Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) will be paid in full, with the assistance of the JFF.

“Yes, they (referees) will be sorted out,” Wint told The Gleaner. “We have received the cheques and are just waiting for them to be cleared. We received them (cheques) sometimes last week and they (refs) should see their monies by Wednesday of this week.”

One of the issue surrounding the delay in payment stemmed from the Premier League Clubs Association’s insistence that the JFF promised to assist with the fees and refused to take up the cost on their own.

“The JFF is contributing towards it, so both parties have worked it out,” Wint said.

The Premier League is set to kick off on September 2 and Wint said the JFF is pleased to have finally put this issue behind it, and he foresees no delay to the start of the season.

Different connotations

Wint also said the JFF will look into increasing the quota for transfer fees RSPL clubs pay to lower-league clubs for players. However, he said such an adjustment will not be possible until after this season.

“It is something that we always look at, but it has a lot of different connotations to it,” he said. “So you have all the different factors to make that determination. But it’s an ongoing thing and it not something that will ever be closed. We are looking at it, and will continue to look at it.

“It has been there for a while and it is something that the JFF is actively looking at to see how we can satisfy all parties concerned. So, come next year, we will look at it again. We have already signed off for the relations for this year, but come next year we will review, with the recommendations from the technical and competitions department.”
