Hudson-Gayle tipped for Intercol presidency

For the past year, a steering committee has been running the affairs of the Jamaica Intercollegiate Sports Association (Intercol), following the resignation of Dalton Myers as president.

A few days after Myers’ announcement, general secretary of the association, Laurence Garriques, a lecturer at the University of Technology, also threw in the towel.

Despite the establishment of the steering committee, the organisation has suffered a fallout, with no sports awards or cricket competition taking place last season.

Things are expected to change for the upcoming season, as a new executive body will be selected to run Intercol’s affairs today at the annual general meeting, slated for The University of the West Indies (UWI), starting at 10 a.m.

UWI’s Dr Dorothy Hudson-Gayle looks set to take over as president, following in the footsteps of Grace Jackson, and becoming the second female to serve in that capacity.

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

Hudson-Gayle, the only nominee for the post, is presently head of Athletics Department and Training at The UWI and has a wealth of experience in the area of sport administration. She spent six years at Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College between 1988-94 and was at Mico College between 1998 to 1999 before moving to UWI, where she served between 1999 and 2005 before migrating overseas.

Former Intercol President Anthony Davis, who was in charge between 2009 and 2015, thinks Hudson-Gayle is capable of doing a good job.

“It is a challenging post, but I think she has the capability to do so, as she has a lot of experience and is very knowledgeable in the area,” said Davis.
