Molynes look to continue run at Vere

When UWI FC scored their second goal against Molynes United in their Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) match last Sunday, there was an uneasy feeling that Molynes’ home opener was going to end on a sour note.

But they rallied back from the deficit and came all the way back to win 3-2 to send the home crowd happy and maintain their winning start to the season.

They hope to continue that run when they face fellow promoted side Vere United at the Wembley Centre of Excellence at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow.

Head coach Lijyasu Simms was proud of the way the team fought their way back against UWI and being able to trust in the style of football they were playing.

“It’s a good feeling,” he said. “Molynes United is playing some beautiful football. We possess the ball. Sticking to the task and working hard really pays off. That’s how we got the goal. I never had any doubts that we would come back. I know that the system that we play we are going to get chances. It’s how well we take the chances.”

Molynes have taken to life in the nation’s top flight well after a memorable opener in the first Monday night game of the season, shocking defending champions Portmore United 3-0. But while many on the outside were surprised at the way they have taken on the RSPL, Simms knew the potential of the squad he has in front of him.

“I’m not surprised,” he said. “We have quality players, and we have seasoned Premier League players that joined Molynes United. We know what we have and we know what the players are capable of. They are just showing what they can do.”

Simms is by no means getting ahead of himself in terms of the possibilities for his team going forward and is constantly making sure that it is challenged daily.

“Football is 70 per cent mental,” he said. “So what we did, we kept talking to the players and let them know about the task we have at hand. We have to remain grounded and keep working. That is [how we are going to get] to where we want to go.”

A boost to the team is the performance of the sibling duo of Nicholas and Jermy Nelson, the latter scoring the winner in the 72nd minute. Simms credits the experienced they gained on loan to Cavalier FC last season to their performance and is banking on them to be one of the catalysts to continue their good form.

“They are showing the ­experience that they have learnt in the season they were at Cavalier, and it’s a boost to our team going forward. Once they stay focused and stay grounded, the sky is the limit for them,” he said.
