Doha, Qatar:

Shanice Love believes it is only a matter of time before Jamaica’s female discus throwers catch up with their male counterparts.

Love’s comments came after she and national champion, Shadae Lawrence, crashed out of the competition here in the first round yesterday.

The male throwers are still in celebratory mood after Fedrick Dacres became the first Jamaican to medal in the event on Monday.

“It’s is good time for the throwers in Jamaica now, and I am happy to be a part of this group,” Love said.

A matter of time

“It is only a matter of time before we start enjoying the same success as the males.”

The former Excelsior High School thrower could only manage 59.90m for ninth in Group A of the qualifiers yesterday. Her teammate, Lawrence, threw 58.51m for 10th.

“I am disappointed, for one,” Lawrence said. “It is a learning experience, so all I have to do is just go back to the drawing board.

“I was thinking too much on my first two throw. On the last throw, I said to myself ‘Go for it,’ because it is the last throw and it was my best throw.”

Before yesterday, Love last competed at the Pan American Games in August.

“It has been a long season. I have been competing from March, plus not being able to compete since the Pan Am didn’t help me,” she said.
