Molynes United passed their toughest test of the season so far, defeating Mount Pleasant FA 1-0 in their Red Stripe Premier League fixture at the Drewsland Stadium yesterday.

Rayan Brown scored the only goal of the game in the 39th minute, extending the club’s winning record to six straight games, solidifying their place atop the table with 18 points.

It is a result that head coach Lijaysu Simms knew that his side had to earn to preserve their winning start.

“It was one of our tougher games,” he said. “I must lift of my hat to my team. The youngsters have come out and fought like lions. This is our sixth game and our sixth win. As we continue, we will go back to the training ground again and prepare for our next game.”

Mount Pleasant interim head coach Paul Davis lamented not being able to get anything from the game, despite having the better of the chances.

“We have been missing chances like that since I took over the team,” he said. “It’s not like we haven’t be practising. We just need to take the chances.”

The visitors will be aghast as to how they were not able to steal a point from the league leaders after controlling play for most of the game. Kemar Beckford dragged a shot wide after controlling the ball brilliantly, and soon after that, Cardel Benbow’s one-time shot hit the post, with the follow-up from Kevaughn Issacs sailing wide of the goal.

With all the chances in their favour, Mount Pleasant were sucker-punched six minutes from the interval when Brown received a good pass from Fakibi Farquharson and his shot deflected off a Mount Pleasant player, as goalkeeper Joseph Vargas watched it helplessly roll into the net. Mount Pleasant missed their best chance of the game just moments after this when Kesslan Hall’s one-time effort from a cross banged off the crossbar.

Molynes United are now five points ahead of second-placed Waterhouse who won their game against UWI FC 2-0.
