Anchovy continue historic run under Hector Wright

Anchovy High School’s historic run in the 2019 ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup continued yesterday at Jarrett Park as they defeated Cedric Titus 1-0 in their first-ever ­quarter-final match.

Mark Smith scored the lone first-half goal for Anchovy.

Former Reggae Boy and current coach of Anchovy, Hector Wright, who is responsible for the school’s rise to fame in this his second year at the helm, said belief and support have been the difference makers for them.

“Winning the first game at this stage of the competition is very important, and that is what I told the boys, especially with us playing at home,” said Wright.

“What we are doing right now is what we came here to do. From I came in last year, I told the guys that I believe in them and it’s just for them to do the same in believing in themselves. We did well last year, and this year, we came back into the competition with a lot of support – Mr Robinson, who was the then principal; Ms Woodstock; Mr Frater; and the teachers. This is one of the main reasons why the guys try to go out and play to the best of their ability,” added Wright.

Newly appointed principal of Anchovy, Lavern Stewart, is extremely excited about the school’s historic campaign and showered praises on Wright for his achievements.

“The entire school family is very excited about what is ­happening with our footballers. This is the first time that Anchovy would have advanced to this level, so we are very much elated for such success ...” said Stewart, who also took time out to applaud the past student body on their support.

“He (Hector Wright) came on last year and has been working assiduously with the boys. We want to commend Mr Wright on the work he has done with these boys. He would have impacted them not only in terms of playing football but also their development as young men and how serious it is to be committed to something and carry it through,” she added.

Also yesterday, Champions Cup holders and last year’s beaten finalists, Cornwall College, edged Garvey Maceo 1-0 at the Juici Field, with Dinthill and McGrath enjoying similar results over Port Antonio and Happy Grove, respectively, in their games at Dinthill.

Meanwhile, Manchester were held to a 0-0 scoreline by Maggotty, with STETHS also drawing blanks in their 0-0 draw with B.B. Coke.
