It stings! - Fudadin century in vain as Scorpions lose second straight game

Left-handed opener Assad Fudadin scored his second List ‘A’ hundred while Nkrumah Bonner made 97; however, the Jamaica Scorpions suffered their second consecutive loss in the Colonial Medical Super50 Cup, going down by an emphatic eight wickets to the Leeward Islands Hurricane at the Conaree ground in St Kitts yesterday.

Asked to take the first strike, the Jamaicans put in a much better batting display than they did against the Barbados Pride, with Fudadin and Bonner leading the charge in their score of 262 for nine off 50 overs.

It wasn’t the best of starts for the visiting Jamaicans as they lost opener Aldane Thomas for 12, Jermaine Blackwood, seven, and Andre McCarthy for nine to be 81 for three in the 22nd over.

However, Fudadin and Bonner set about the recovery mission and batted with maturity as the pair shared in a 133-run fourth-wicket stand.

RUN OUT

During the lengthy vigil at the crease, Fudadin brought up his second hundred in St Kitts, however, when he was on 107, he went via the run-out route with Jamaica in a decent position at 214 for four in 46.4 overs.

Fudadin’s knock included 12 fours and two sixes off 133 balls. Bonner would continue to press on and got himself to 97 in the final over; however, he became one of four Jamaican batsmen to be run out.

His knock came off 81 balls and included four fours and three sixes. Once again, captain Rovman Powell failed with the bat as he was only able to get four before he was bowled by pacer Sheeno Berridge, who finished with two for 59 from his 10 overs.

Fellow pacer Jeremiah Louis also picked up two wickets, while off-spinner Terrance Ward took one for 43.

In reply, the Hurricanes made a mockery of the Scorpions’ total as discarded Windies opener Kieron Powell stole the show with a brilliant 121 not out.

The left-hander shared in a 130-run opening stand with Montcin Hodge, who was equally impressive with a knock of 64 from 78 balls with seven fours and a six.

The Jamaican bowlers were put to the sword by Powell and Hodge, and it was the introduction of part-time spinner Bonner who got the breakthrough, removing Hodge leg before wicket.

By that time, the Leewards were well on their way, and Powell would get to his fourth List ‘A’ hundred; however, he was lucky to do so after being put down by Fudadin on 97.

His knock included eight fours and three sixes off 125 balls as he and Devon Thomas, 32 not out, saw the home team to victory at 264 for two in 45 overs and four deliveries. Amir Jangoo weighed in with 37.

While disappointed with the loss, Fudadin was pleased with his knock.

“It wasn’t an easy hundred,” he said. “The wicket was slow and tacky, and the Leewards utilised the conditions well. This is my second hundred here in St Kitts, and this is a happy hunting ground for me,” said Fudadin.

The Scorpions remain without a point in Group ‘A’ after two games, while the Hurricanes sit atop the standings with 12 points from three games.

The Jamaicans will next face the Combined Campuses and Colleges tomorrow in a day-night game starting at 12:30 p.m. Jamaica time.
