Vere need more character – Reid

Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) newcomers Vere United haven’t had much to cheer about so far this season. However, their outstanding performer of the season, midfielder Xahne Reid, wants them to be more clinical in front of goal. He says that the team needs players with character to get better results away from their home, the Wembley Centre of Excellence in Hayes, Clarendon.

Vere have two wins, seven draws, and one loss from their 10 home games, but away from home, they have just one point from nine matches. They are in last place in the 12-team RSPL table on 14 points.

“I think at home, we are pretty good, but whenever we travel, we tend to get ahead of ourselves and don’t play to our true potential, and then we end up losing,” he said. “Also, whenever we get teams to beat, we have to beat them. We got about six or seven games that we should have won at home by scoring three or four goals, but we only scored one and ended up drawing the game.”

TEAM’S STRUGGLES

The former Glenmuir High player, although pleased with his performance in the league, is disheartened by the team’s struggles.

“I have seven goals, so my performance has been good, and I always try to do my best for the team,” he said. “Once I play my best and get really involved, we always get that boost to push forward for the three points, or at least a point.”

However, he says, with a few additions to the squad in January, Vere can make their results more positive.

“We need some gutsy players to bring some more positives into the team,” he said. “But I will continue to do my best and score goals to try to help my team get three points each match.”

Vere’s next game is on Sunday, when they host Tivoli Gardens at 3 p.m.
