ROHAN KABIR takes Centenary Cup mile with a bang

ROHAN KABIR, running at odds of 8-1, yesterday closed a two-timer for champion trainer Anthony Nunes, upstaging his stablemates, 1-2 favourite BIGBANG and UNIVERSAL BOSS, in the City of Kingston Centenary Cup at a mile.

Acquired by Nunes from Richard Azan during the height of last year’s trainers’ championship battle against Wayne DaCosta, ROHAN KABIR confirmed his improvement at his new barn by going in chase of UNIVERSAL BOSS coming off the home turn and quickly overpowered his stablemate to win by five lengths under Barbadian Simon Husbands.

Nunes saddled the first three past the post in the seven-horse field as BIGBANG, outpaced from the start and put to the whip by Dane Nelson down the backstretch, mildly closed for second close to home, relegating UNIVERSAL BOSS to third.

A Soul Warrior-Raise Your Voice, four-year-old gelding, ROHAN KABIR was logging his second victory in four starts for Nunes, clocking 1:40.1.

Nunes had earlier opened his title defence with money-back favourite PATRIARCH, who made all with Nelson at five furlongs straight, dismissing CAMPESINO by four lengths, running on a tag in the second race, a $1 million optional claiming event.

Meanwhile, Louis Richard’s filly, SHE’S A HIT, shot clear of rivals from the gate to make all at five furlongs round with five-time champion jockey Trevor Simpson blinding the five-horse field with speed, posting 1:00.4 against three-year-old peers, beating SUASION by two and a quarter lengths.

In another sprint, Spencer Chung’s four-year-old filly, TRULY AMAZING, remained unbeaten in three starts, clocking 58.0 at five furlongs straight, beating SIR KEL by five lengths after taking over from JUST TRICK ME two furlongs out.
