Eye Candy delivers sweet win at Caymanas
IMPROVING claiming apprentice, Anthony Allen, rode his first two-timer at Caymanas Park yesterday, taking his career tally to eight winners, four this season, after enduring a torrid first year in the saddle.
Allen, whose nine-pound weight allowance has suddenly become in demand, winning five races since December, was perfect aboard GENUINE TRAIN in the seventh and EYE CANDY in the closing event.
Allen straightened third astride 2-1 chance, GENUINE TRAIN, and led a half-furlong out past PURE HEART, holding TRADITION at Bay.
Astride 5-2 shot, EYE CANDY, Allen’s new-found confidence was on full display, blasting to the lead with the Dennis Lee-trained mare, who made every post a winning one, repelling 46-1 outsider, BALTUSROL, winning by a length and three-quarter in a smart 1:12.3 for six furlongs.
Anthony Thomas and Reyan Lewis also had two winners apiece, including upsetters, which helped to force a Twilight Pick 6 payout of $6.4 million.
TELLING BLOWS
Thomas struck two telling blows, virtually making all with SOUL CURE, a 7-2 shot in the second race, upsetting dethroned champion trainer, Wayne DaCosta, who had five of the six runners in the five-and-a-half furlong event.
Thomas returned to cripple Twilight Pick-6 players in the 10th, at six and a half furlongs, chasing down and nailing JUSTSAYTHEWORD, who led past APRIL SPIRIT coming off the home turn.
Lewis enjoyed an armchair ride aboard champion trainer Anthony Nunes’ 1-2 favourite, TRICKY ONE, in the third, before outfinishing rivals with 6-1 chance, SURE STEP, who sprang to life, going three furlongs straight, down in class, among $180,000 claimers in the sixth.
Racing continues at Caymanas Park on Saturday.
