Pinnock shines at Central Hurdles and Relays meet

KINGSTON College’s (KC) outstanding jumper/hurdler Wayne Pinnock got his campaign off to a sizzling start as he blazed to an impressive record run in the Class One 110m hurdles at yesterday’s Central Hurdles and Relays Meet at the G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sport and Education on Saturday.

With their top rivals absent, KC enjoyed a field day, sweeping all the hurdles events at the meet, with Pinnock leading by example.

Pinnock, the defending champion and Champs record holder in the obstacle event clocked 13.76 seconds, breaking the old mark of 13.90, easily defeating Clarendon College’s Rahyme Christian, 14.13 seconds and KC teammate, Tajae Francis, 14.22 seconds.

“I am very excited with my start to the season and I am looking forward to many more records in both the hurdles and jumps this season,” said Pinnock, who stated he is looking to compete at the National Senior Championships in both events this year.

Meanwhile, KC took the top three spots in Class Three, while they had a quinella in Class Two.

Ra’john Gray, 13.73 seconds, who was running in a negative wind of minus 1.3 metres per second, won the Class Three event ahead of Jaden Campbell and Nicardo Johnson, who both clocked 14.01 seconds for second and third respectively. Amontoe Wray, 14.63 seconds won the Class Two 110m event, ahead of teammate Yourie Lawrence 14.80 seconds as Khalel Dillon 14.22 seconds of Wolmer’s Boys, 14.22 seconds.

It was the same story in the 400m hurdles where KC dominated the Class Two and Class One events.

Antonio Forbes, 55.67 seconds outlasted Edwin Allen’s Bryan Levell, 55.74, while KC’s Lennox Barrett was third in 56.91 seconds.

KC closed their dominance with a podium finish in Class One led by Shantamoi Brown, who won in 53.06 seconds ahead of last year’s Champs Class Two silver medallist and gold medallist Ryan Campbell and Jadean Brown, who were second and third respectively in 53.16 and 53.48 seconds.

It was also a good day for Edwin Allen’s girls with their 4x800m relay team giving them a perfect start after winning the first event of the day in 9:10.70.

Lashanna Graham gave them a quick double after taking the 400m hurdles Open in 59.13 ahead of the Holmwood’s Daniele Brissett 1:00.62 and Edwin Allen’s Lotavia Brown 1:01.90.

Salieca Myles (Edwin Allen) topped the field in the Class Two 100m hurdles, taking the event in 13.97 seconds (-1.5 mps). Manchester’s Janela Spencer 14.29 and Sashel Reid (St Jago), 14.39 ended second and third respectively.

Athletes from SprinTec dominated events among the seniors with Natasha Morrison and Oshane Bailey leading the way.

Morrison’s victory came in the Women’s Invitational 60m in 7.52 seconds. Second went to Donya Ewars of UTech in 7.77 seconds with Michae Harriot, also of Sprintec taking third in 7.84 seconds.

It was 1-2-3 for Sprintec in the Men’s 60m as Bailey clocked 6.82 seconds to beat training partners Chadric Hinds 6.84 and Romario Williams 6.86 seconds into second and third.

Ronda Whyte took the Women’s Open 200m in 24.73 seconds while Michael Sharpe won the Men’s equivalent in 22.17 seconds.
