Hillel, Sts Peter and Paul bag Mayberry Swim titles

Kai Radcliffe of Queen’s Prep wins the boys 9-10 50m breaststroke in a meet record 40.17 seconds at the Mayberry Preparatory/Primary swim meet held at the National Aquatic Centre yesterday.

Hillel Academy and Sts Peter and Paul Preparatory captured the prep school girls and boys’ titles, respectively, at the 2020 Mayberry Investments Prep/Primary Swim Meet held at the National Aquatic Centre yesterday.

Hillel accumulated 244 points to secure victory for the girls, with Sts Peter and Paul coming in second with 234, and Mona finishing in third with 224. Hillel were pipped to the boys’ title by Sts Peter and Paul, who won with 257, while Mona Prep came third with 118. Jessie Ripoll took the primary school crown.

Hillel coach Wendy Lee was pleased with the performance of her team.

“I am extremely happy with their performances. I was quite confident going into the meet, based on the last school meet, that we were going to do very well,” Lee told The Sunday Gleaner.

Hillel had two records in the relays, setting new times in the Boys’ 7-8 200m freestyle relay and the Girls’ 9-10 200m freestyle relay.

There were notable performances in the pool yesterday who included Kai Radcliffe of Queen’s Prep setting a new meet record in the Boys’ 9-10 50m breaststroke, with a time of 40.17 seconds. Renee Chung of Junior World Prep won the Girls’ 11-12 50m butterfly in a new meet record of 34.63 seconds.

In the high school section on Friday, Immaculate Conception dominated, winning the girls’ title with an overwhelming 802 points. St Andrew High finished second with 342, while Montego Bay High came third with 119. Wolmer’s Boys took the boys’ title with 619 points ahead of Kingston College, 303 points, and Jamaica College, 174.

NATIONAL SWIMMERS

Immaculate’s coach, Teddy Hayles, praised the performance of his team, especially the contingent of swimmers that are national representatives.

“Most of our points come through several of our national swimmers. They scored major points, so that helped us a lot,” he sad

Victorious Wolmer’s Boys coach Ishmedo Wolfe credited the team synergy shown by his charges.

“It was a fantastic performance by the young men. I think the team spirit among them was really great,” said Wolfe.

A total of 16 records fell at the high school level on Friday, with national junior swimmer Kyle Sinclair grabbing two of the three individual records set for Wolmer’s in the Boys’ 13-14 200m freestyle and the Boys’ 15-16 100m freestyle. Immaculate Conception’s Zaneta Alvaranga recorded new times in the Girls’ 13-14 100m freestyle and the 50m butterfly, respectively. Both schools had relay success with the Immaculate Conception A team setting a meet record of 1:57:15 in the Girls’ 13-14 200m freestyle relay and Wolmer’s setting meet records in the Boys’ 13-14 200m medley relay and the Boys’ 15-16 200m freestyle relay, respectively.
