Examples made of Faulkland FC players
JFF Western Confederation Charley’s JB Rum Super League officials say that the decision to ban two Faulkland FC players for their role in a brawl during a game was with the image of the competition in mind.
Faulkland players Marvin Sangster and Tyshan Hill were suspended from all football activity on Wednesday for 24 and 36 months, respectively, for violent conduct in an incident with Harmony FC player Richard Henry at Jarrett Park on February 15. The duo, whose bans took effect on March 6, were also fined $25,000 each.
Their teammate Jelani Nicholson was suspended for the remainder of the season and fined $15,000 on the grounds of physically assaulting someone or damaging his health.
The club was fined $50,000 on the grounds of a lack of discipline and order inside or outside the grounds before, during, or after a match (invasion or attempted invasion by spectators, missiles being thrown, and other incidents).
Disciplinary committee chairman David Watt said that the body has to send a message to players if they are to prevent these incidents from chasing sponsors away.
Hard to get sponsors now
“We had to do what was needed to protect the image of football,” he said. “It is hard to get sponsors now, and these things won’t do well for the image. It was an ugly incident, so we had to send a message to players.”
The brawl left Henry, 17 years old, nursing multiple facial fractures and a chest injury. Punishment for his involvement in the incident is still pending a hearing by the competition’s disciplinary committee.
