While many Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) players are finding it very difficult to stay motivated and maintain their training regime until the league is able to restart, Portmore defender Romaine Breakenridge remains highly motivated and eager for play to resume.

“I have been doing some serious work. I wrote a programme for fitness and ball work. It is a little challenging, but you have to ask yourself, ‘I have come this far, so why give up now?’ I get up every morning and do a 30-minute jog and then get in little ball work and keep as active as possible with the small areas I have,” he said.

He noted that without the virus, which has forced the suspension of most sports worldwide, they would be coming to the end of the season, but he had prepared himself mentally for a nine-month campaign.

TIME TO IMPROVE

“At this point, we would be around the final stages of the Premier League. At the beginning of the season, I had set my mind on a long season, so now that I am not able to play competitively it is not really a big challenge.

“Players should not see this as a time to rest, each has to see this as a time to improve on certain areas that they are not strong in, and be mentally prepared and physically prepared for anything because the league can be recalled tomorrow. You have to be ready at all times, and this means maintaining a certain level of fitness,” he reasoned.

Portmore won the last two RSPL titles, and Breakenridge said everyone at the club is aiming for their third successive hold, and they hope the league returns soon so that they can fulfil their ambitions.

“I believe in my teammates. Everybody is doing different things but we have one aim, and we are not leaving anyone behind. We contact each other and ensure everyone is fine and putting in the work, so when we get back to training no one is behind, everyone should be rubbing shoulders with the aim of getting the job done.

“I personally want to see Portmore United win it three times in a row. That is still the objective and the players are focused on that. It will be a tough one but nothing comes easy. Good things come to those who wait, and we are patiently waiting for the league to resume to go back out there and lift the title again,” he said.
