Robinson targets NJ growth despite COVID setback

New Netball Jamaica (NJ) president, Tricia Robinson, is confident the association will manage its way through the current global health crisis and come out better for it.
Robinson took over the reins from Dr Paula Daley-Morris in February, just a month before the coronavirus pandemic brought the world to a standstill. Nevertheless, she has set her sights on increasing Jamaica’s international success, securing sustainable financial development, forging new corporate partnerships and increasing participation in the sport islandwide, despite the COVID-19 setback.
“It is good that we are now ranked number three (in the world). Having participated in the Nations Cup (England) in January, one of the goals is to increase our international success as we would like our country to be ranked number one, but it is one step at a time,” Robinson said.
“In order to be number one, we have to have sustainable financial development. We also need to forge new corporate partnership and we need increased participation in netball islandwide,” she stated.
Robinson is currently in discussions with the parish netball presidents regarding boosting participation in the sport nationally, and so far, according to her, the conversations have been positive.
‘BUILD ON THE GOOD’
“If you get the parish presidents engaged then we can forge the partnership and ensure there is quality of play in all the parishes. And this will also be a pathway for youngsters to reach the national level,” she added.
“The plan is to build on the good and improve what can be improved ... . Everybody likes a winner, so as long as the ladies are doing well and making Jamaica proud, we know that corporate Jamaica will come on board.”
“The Sunshine Girls have always made Jamaica proud and I believe in my coach (Connie Francis). We selected her and she has done well and we expect her to continue doing well. So we are taking the time to do the work, and as soon as this (pandemic) is lifted we will be back on the courts working hard again,” added Robinson.
