Flemmings placed on administrative leave by Phoenix Rising

Junior Flemmings, the Jamaican Phoenix Rising striker alleged to have used a Jamaican homophobic slur against an openly gay player, has been placed on administrative leave by his club.

The incident, which Flemmings has since denied, is alleged to have taken place during a United Soccer League (USL) playoff game between Phoenix and San Diego Loyal on Wednesday night. Loyal, who were leading 3-1 at the time of the alleged incident, walked off the field in protest around the 45th minute of play, but forfeited after deciding not to return for the second half.

Phoenix issued the news of the sanction on its Twitter page late on Thursday night.

"Phoenix Rising FC and USL's investigation into the events surrounding yesterday's match with San Diego Loyal SC are fully underway," the club said. "In furtherance of the investigation, our players and head coach participated in extensive interviews with the USL today. Until the investigation is concluded by the USL, Phoenix Rising midfielder Junior Flemmings will be taking an administrative leave so that he may focus fully on cooperating with the investigation."

Flemmings' coach, Rick Schantz has also been placed on administrative leave.

"Additionally, and unrelated to USL's investigation, Head Coach Rick Schantz will also be taking administrative leave," the club said. "Phoenix Rising is actively anti-homophobia and anti-racist and has a zero tolerance policy for actions which run contrary to these core values."
