ANOTHER AFFAIR (centre), ridden by Anthony Thomas, defeats ONEOFAKIND, ridden by Dane Nelson, at Caymanas Park on Saturday, November 14.

ONEOFAKIND turned the tables on a dull-looking even-money favourite, ANOTHER AFFAIR, beating the much-travelled filly into third place in yesterday’s restricted stakes at nine furlongs and 25 yards.

Reporting for her third race in a little over five weeks, Jamaica Derby third-place ANOTHER AFFAIR took over from stablemate AWESOME TREASURE with 6-5 chance ONEOFAKIND tracking down the backstretch.

Showing the effects of a two-week return after her big derby run, beating ONEOFAKIND into second at seven and a half furlongs, ANOTHER AFFAIR meekly surrendered the lead to her pursuers three and a half furlongs out.

AWESOME TREASURE, who ONEOFAKIND had relegated to third behind ANOTHER AFFAIR in their previous meeting at seven and a half, was no match for the staying colt, who took over early in the stretch run and pulled away under Dane Nelson.

Victory

ONEOFAKIND’s victory in the $930,000 event added $507,750 to champion trainer Anthony Nunes’ expanding lead over challenger Wayne DaCosta, the 18-time title-holder he dethroned last season.

Meanwhile, Nelson won two races on the 10-race card to reduce Anthony Thomas’ lead to five atop the jockeys’ standings, earlier landing the sixth event astride BLU ATTITUDE.

Thomas made all astride Steven Todd’s filly, AWESOME CHOICE, scoring a mild 8-1 upset in the Sunnyside Stakes for two-year-olds.

Returning with visor and tongue tie removed after chasing JAHSENDBLESSINGS in her previous race, the Sensational Slam-Lipstick Lily filly left the wide draw, post 14, like a bullet to lead the five-furlong round event at the half-mile marker.

Given sharp reminders of the whip in the straight to shake off pesky SURE CURLIN, AWESOME CHOICE stayed on strongly ahead of Nelson astride Nunes’ MAGICAL MOOD, clocking 1:00.4.

Todd shared the day’s training honours with Al Brown, earlier posting TRIPLE SEVEN, who benefited from a well-rated ride from Linton Steadman at six and a half furlongs in the second event.

Brown’s three-year-old maiden, D’S CHOICE, stunned bettors at odds of 22-1 in third at six and a half furlongs, taking over from WIFEY SEZ SO to stroll in by three and three-quarter lengths under apprentice Jordan Barrett.

Brown’s BEACH BOY next reproduced the form he showed behind multiple winner, DEEP BLUE SEA, to hand his trainer back-to-back winners with apprentice Oshane Nugent astride.

Racing continues at Caymanas Park this weekend with a consecutive Saturday-Sunday meet.
