Justin Burrowes continued his no-nonsense approach towards claiming another National title, as he stepped up the pace after another workmanlike round at the Caymanas Golf Club yesterday, to maintain his lead in the zero to six category after day two of the four-day Jamaica Golf Association National Championships.

Burrowes shot the only under par round of the day, as his three-under-par 69 saw him extending his lead by eight shots over the second-place Mark Newnham, who overtook defending champion William Knibbs, who sits third.

Burrowes was clinical for the most part, on a day that brought both the wind and rain, carding three birdies on the front nine to make the turn at three-under.

The former Caribbean Junior champion then had two more birdies on holes 13 and 15 to go along with two bogeys, to finish with a three-under-par 69 to go with his opening round 73 for a total of 142.

For Burrowes, day two’s round was more of the same from his opening round, despite missing a couple of putts which would have rendered his score better.

“I felt like I made more putts today and I would say that I was driving and hitting the ball well,” he said yesterday. “I am doing all the parts of the game pretty well right now, so it was just about execution.”

Newnham followed up his opening 76 with a two-over-par 74 to leapfrog Knibbs who shot seven over par 79 after posting two-over par 74 on Thursday.

Newnham had three birdies and three bogeys in his round which now totals 150. Knibbs, on the other hand, had a six over par on the par-four 11th hole after hitting his drive out of bounds. The defending champion, despite getting back two birdies, could not recover and is now 11 shots off the lead.

In the men’s seven to 12 category, Thajae Richards continues to lead after a second-round 78 to go with his opening round 88. Tony Allison leads the men’s zero to 12 seniors after an eight-over par 80 for a total of 162, that’s two shots ahead of Dave Cameron who followed up his 87 with a 77.

Jodi Munn-Barrow continues to lead the ladies category, after carding a five-over par 77 to go with her opening round 72.

Her total of 149 is 20 shots better than second-place Samantha Azan.
