JAMAICA WILL head into today’s second round of the 64th Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships (CAGC) in second place in the Hoerman Cup standings, following a team score of 21 over par 309 in the opening round of the tournament, which is currently underway at the Country Club at Grand Reserve, Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.

The Jamaicans are 19 shots off the lead, which is currently being held by host country Puerto Rico, which had a team total of two over par 290. The Dominica Republic round out the top three, following their team total of 24 over par 312.

Jamaica’s charge was led by national amateur champion, Justin Burrowes, who carded an even-par 72 to be tied for third in the individual standings. William Knibb shot a six-over-par 78, while Owen Samuda had a seven-over par round 79. Shamar Wilson rounded out the top four best scores for the Jamaicans with an eight over par 80.

The Jamaican women were not so lucky in the George Teale Trophy, as they are currently fourth after the opening round, following their 16 over par 160 total. The Jamaicans trail leaders Puerto Rico by 10 shots, following their opening round score of six-over-par 150.

The Dominican Republic and US Virgin Islands are in second and third, respectively, following rounds of 155 and 159.

Madelyn Newkirk was the best Jamaican female on show, following her six over par round of 68. Her efforts see her fifth in the individual ladies’ standings. Mattea Issa shot a 10 over par 82 to be tied for eighth in the individual standings.

Team manager, Robert Chin, summed up the Jamaica’s team’s opening performance.

“Team Jamaica didn’t perform as well as we expected. The conditions were very windy and the greens were performing at a much different speed than what we practised on,” said Chin. “The team spirit is still high and we expect a much-improved performance.”
