Jamaica Tallawahs’ captain, Rovman Powell, says that he still wants his team’s batsmen to continue having an aggressive mentality despite going down to the Barbados Royals by 15 runs in their second cricket game of the 2021 Caribbean Premier League (CPL) at Warner Park in Basseterre, St Kitts, yesterday.

After their 120-run victory on Friday against the St Lucia Kings, the Tallawahs could only muster 146 for nine in reply to the Royals’ modest total of 161 for five. The Barbadian franchise won the toss and elected to bat first.

“We talk about the brand of cricket that we want to play and that is the brand of cricket that we want to play. We can mix it with a little bit more smart (plays), a little bit more single in the middle overs and then we will be fine,” Powell said when asked about their aggressive style.

Glenn Phillips top-scored for the Royals with an unbeaten 56 runs from 46 balls, while Raymon Reifer chipped in with an unbeaten 31 from 20 balls.

All-rounder Andre Russell had a costly spell with the ball, getting one wicket for 49 runs and failed to fire with the bat after being caught first ball. Veerasammy Permaul had two for 15 runs, while Megael Pretorius took one for 39.

“I think in the last five overs we strayed a little bit away from the plan and while batting, I think I got out at a very important time in the game. We also lost Andre (Russell) at a key time of the game,” Powell said after the game.

The Tallawahs will face the Royals again on Tuesday.

PATRIOTS’ SECOND WIN

Meanwhile, in the day’s opening game, openers Evin Lewis and Devon Thomas lashed contrasting fifties in a century stand as St Kitts and Nevis Patriots romped to their second straight win with an eight-wicket thrashing of Guyana Amazon Warriors yesterday.

Chasing 148 at Warner Park, the hosts raced to their target with seven balls remaining, to remain unbeaten while dealing Amazon Warriors their first defeat. The left-handed Lewis hammered 62 from 39 balls with four fours and five sixes while Thomas stroked a measured unbeaten 55 from 54 deliveries with seven fours and a six, the pair posting 113 to erase any doubt over the result.

Scores: AMAZON WARRIORS 146 for eight off 20 overs (Chanderpaul Hemraj 39, Mohammad Hafeez 38 not out, Nicholas Pooran 23; Dominic Drakes 3-26, Fawad Ahmed 2-33). PATRIOTS 147 for two off 18.5 overs (Evin Lewis 62, Devon Thomas 55 not out).
