Slammer lands Cash Pot
RICHARD AZAN’S colts, SLAMMER and PERFECT BREW, chased down 2-5 favourite PRNCSSHOOTINGSTAR in the stretch run, beating the speedy filly into fourth place in yesterday’s Cash Pot ‘Only One For me’ Trophy race for two-year-olds at six furlongs.
All the rage after her smashing debut at three furlongs straight in August, PRNCSSHOOTINGSTAR tried to make all on the round course but was never allowed to settle with the field close on her heels heading into the home turn.
SLAMMER took the shortest route along the rail, whereas stablemate PERFECT BREW straightened four wide, both taking aim at PRNCSSHOOTINGSTAR.
It was SLAMMER who showed a better turn of foot on the inner, quickening under Dick Cardenas to attack PRNCSSHOOTINGSTAR a furlong and a half out.
Though PERFECT BREW appeared to be going strong on the outside, he was no match for 4-1 chance SLAMMER, who pulled away to win in 1:14.2.
SILENT MISSION closed late to grab third from PRNCSSHOOTINGSTAR in the $3.25 million event.
Cardenas returned to win the following event aboard 7-2 shot SKY ZONE, completing a two-timer on the 10-race card.
The Cash Pot ‘Super Dash’ Trophy for open allowance runners was won by Gary Subratie’s DUKE with Robert Halledeen astride, clocking 1:00.0 for five furlongs round.
DUKE pounced on torrid early splits set by VICTORY TURN and topweight FATHER PATRICK, whose woes were further compounded by being slowly into stride and having to rush down from his wide draw in the eight-horse field.
Taking over from VICTORY TURN entering the straight, FATHER PATRICK, lugging 126lbs, tried hard to stave off run-on sprinter DUKE, who he allowed nine pounds.
LABAN, who tried closing as a team with DUKE, stayed on for second.
Racing continues this afternoon with the return of Sunday meets, a nine-race card set to run off at 12:15 p.m.
