Frazer wins by TKO on pro debut

Boxer Joshua Frazer is feeling optimistic after winning his professional debut against Paul Ezequiel Acosta on Saturday.
Frazer defeated the Argentinian by technical knockout in the second round at the CAA Centre in Ontario, Canada.
“Winning my first pro bout is something special, and I hope that it is a stepping stone to a great future,” Frazer, the former amateur welterweight and light middleweight competitor, said.
His fight was one of seven on a card promoted by United Boxing Promotions, their first in over two years because of the COVID-19 pandemic. An estimated crowd of 4,000 attended.
Frazer, who has Jamaican and Canadian citizenship, has been fighting for Jamaica for several years under the guidance of his father Dewith, who has represented Jamaica as a boxer and coach, and now runs his own gym in Canada.
Going into the fight with an opponent who had a 7-5-3 record, Frazer expressed confidence of winning on his debut, and backed this up, when, after a tentative start, he exploded with a mixture of punches to the body and head. He floored Acosta with a hard punch to the body at about the two-minute mark, and put him down once more with one to the head.
He was quickly on the attack again in the second round and after putting his opponent down two more times, the referee stepped in and called a halt to the fight.
His trainer told The Gleaner yesterday that he was worried that Joshua would have been too anxious at the start of the fight, and was surprised by his composure.
“He was poised, did exactly as he was told to do, and had a great start to his career as a professional,” Dewith said. “I hope that he will continue to do well.”
Joshua’s next fight takes place at the same venue on February 26.
