BGLC bets on Abu Dhabi swimmers
Pumps $100,000 in FINA World Swimming Championship campaign
THE PARTICIPATION of Jamaica’s team at the 15th FINA World Swimming Championship has been made possible, in part, by a $100,000 donation from the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission (BGLC) to the Aquatic Sports Association of Jamaica.
President of the Aquatic Sports Association of Jamaica, Martin Lyn, gratefully received the donation just days before team members headed to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, where the championships are being held.
“As time goes by, our swimmers will achieve greatness and our swimmers will go on to bigger and better meets, and this is one of the ways in which we can springboard them to getting there, with sponsorship funds that we are always grateful to receive,” said Lyn.
National development
“It is important to us to ensure that some of the proceeds from gambling can go towards good causes, especially national development, community development and youth development initiatives,” said Jeanette Lewis, manager, corporate affairs and communication at BGLC, regulator of gambling in Jamaica. “This donation in particular helps ensure that two members of the Jamaican team are able to travel to the competition to represent our country on the world stage of swimming.”
The FINA World Short Course Swimming Championship is one of the qualifying meets for global swimming competitions, including the Commonwealth Games to be held in Birmingham in 2022. Jamaica is being represented by Alia Atkinson, Keanan Dols, Zaneta Alvaranga and Sidrell Williams.
