Calculus too good for OneOfAKind
SHANE ELLIS used drifting tactics in the stretch run to have last year’s derby and St Leger winner, Gary Subratie’s CALCULUS, hold off ONEOFAKIND at a mile in yesterday’s Alexander Hamilton Trophy, beating his five-year-old rival by a half-length.
ONEOFAKIND tried racing as a team with CALCULUS, tracking AWESOME TREASURE down the backstretch, but fell back to third when the pace quickened leaving the half-mile.
CALCULUS went in chase of his speedy stablemate while Robert Halledeen roused ONEOFAKIND to pick up the pace from third approaching the home turn.
Challenging in mid-track, after CALCULUS took over from AWESOME TREASURE a furlong and a half out, Halledeen was forced to switch ONEOFAKIND towards the rail, forced by Ellis anticipating his rival’s bid.
Ellis’ gamesmanship continued inside the last half-furlong, shadowing ONEOFAKIND, now on his inner, to the wire, winning in 1:38.3, his second victory of the afternoon, following a gate-to-wire showing astride 1-5 favourite SILVER FOX in the third.
HAT-TRICK FOR FOSTER
Tevin Foster closed the 10-race card with a hat-trick, starting with MOTHER NATURE, followed by 11-1 outsider, MILKMAN, and Subratie’s 5-2 chance, SWEET N SMART, who took over from WEEKEND JAZZ off the home turn and held on resolutely from stablemate PHAROAH IT IS despite drifting to the stands’ side.
Racing continues this afternoon with a 10-race card.
