THE 2022 local track and field continues today with the staging of the JAAA/Puma Fuller-Anderson Development Meet at G.C. Foster College in Spanish Town.

Events start at 8:30 a.m.

The meet, which is back after a year’s absence because of the COVID-19 pandemic, will be held at its new venue for the first time after being held at Alcan Kirkvine for many years. Meet director Jerry Holness told The Gleaner yesterday that all is in place for a successful staging, despite many challenges. “It has been challenging to host this meet,” Holness said. “Due to the various protocols, there had to be a change of venue and it could not have been held at the usual time because we did not get the required approval on time. We also had to use G.C. Foster because this has become a permanent venue for most of the meets because of its readiness,” said Holness who stated that once things get back to normal, the meet will return to its usual venue.

With the meet now at its new venue, there will be several additional events. All the hurdle events for males and females will be contested. The females will compete first, between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., with the males starting at 1:30 p.m.

TOP TEAMS IN ACTION

With this the only meet down to take place today, most of the top teams will be in action. The 200 metres will take the spotlight with Edwin Allen High’s Tina Clayton and Hydel High’s Brianna Lyston to feature in Class One. Both athletes were off to excellent starts to their 2022 campaign, with Lyston being the top female over the 100 metres at the Purewater JC/R. Danny Williams Meet in January and two weeks later at the same venue, Clayton, the World Under-20 champion in the 100 metres, producing the fastest time over the 200m. Both could meet today in the half-lap event. Clayton’s only loss last year was to Lyston and she will be aiming to avenge that defeat.

Jamaica College’s duo of Christopher Scott and Deandre Watkins will lead the way in the Class One boy’ 200m, with the likes of Nicholas Francis of Kingston College and Odaine Crooks of St Jago High, to make the event very competitive.

Events down to be contested today: 200m, 400m, 800m, 70mH, 80mH, 100mH, 400mH, 3000m, 5000m and 4x400m.
