Former Rusea’s, Vere Technical and Hydel High School standout Lamara Distin broke the national high jump record to win the event at the Texas Relays in the United States today.

Competing for Texas A&M, Distin cleared 1.96 metres to erase the previous record of 1.93m, set by Sheree Francis in 2010.

Distin’s performance is also a new Texas A&M record, and the fifth-best mark on the collegiate all-time list.

The 22-year-old Distin also secured the qualification standard to the World Athletics Championships, which will be held in Eugene from July 15-24.
