Gordon bags four-for to guide Royals over United Stars

NATIONAL FAST bowler Nicholson Gordon continued his purple patch this season after claiming four wickets to help his team, the Surrey Royals, to a 13-run victory over the Middlesex United Stars as action continued in the Dream XI Jamaica T10 Blast at Sabina Park yesterday.
Gordon bowled with pace and accuracy and claimed four for 21 from two overs as the Stars could only manage to get to 88 for six in pursuit of 102 runs to win.
The Jamaica pacer got things going from the very first ball of the United Stars innings when he had captain John Campbell caught hooking in the deep for nought.
Gordon then had Suwayne Wilson caught and bowled for six, at six for two, before Peat Salmon had Damani Sewell caught for three, to leave the United Stars’ innings in tatters at 12 for three in the second over.
A 58-run fourth-wicket partnership between Alwyn Williams, 41, and Anthony Walters, 32, not out, gave the United Stars’ innings some impetus, however, Gordon returned to remove Williams and Amoi Campbell for a duck to halt the momentum.
FIRST HALF-CENTURY
Earlier, Leroy Lugg struck the first half-century of the competition as his 51 from 24 balls helped the Royals post 101 for eight in their 10 overs.
The opener batted through to the ninth over and hit five sixes and two fours. West Indies batsmen Brandon King and Nkrumah Bonner both failed to add to the Royal’s score.
Despite not contributing any runs to the team’s win, captain King was pleased to get off to a winning start in the competition.
“I thought the guys did well. We have a very deep batting line-up and we put some runs on the board through a fine innings from Leroy Lugg. We got some early wickets at the top, which really pegged them back, and we virtually controlled the game from there.”
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Middlesex Titans beat the Cornwall Warriors by four wickets.
Batting first, the Warriors posted 97 for five from their allotted 10 overs with Kerry Holness top-scoring with 44 from 27 balls, inclusive of five fours and two sixes. Damion Ebanks chipped in with 22 from 12 balls against two wickets for 10 runs from Krishmar Santokie.
The Titans, led by Jamie Merchant’s 40 from 19 balls, secured victory at 98 for six despite four wickets for eight runs from captain Michael Frew.
