ST JOHN’S, Antigua, (CMC):

CRICKET WEST Indies president, Ricky Skerritt has hailed late West Indies all-rounder David Holford as “the quintessential West Indies cricketer and ambassador”.

Holford, who played 24 Tests for West Indies between 1966 and 1977, died in his native Barbados late Monday at age 82.

“David Holford epitomised the values of cricket both on and off the field and was the quintessential West Indies cricketer and ambassador,” Skerritt said as he paid tribute to the former West Indies manager and convenor of selectors.

“As a player, he was a top-quality all-rounder and captain who gave his utmost at all levels. As an administrator, team manager, and pitch curator, he demonstrated his ongoing love for the game by his vision and dedication.

“He had a hand in the development of several young players across the region, not just in cricket, but in several other fields of endeavour.

“David’s legacy is, therefore, one of service and dedication to Barbados and West Indies cricket. CWI hereby extends our deepest condolences to his wife, Marva, and all family and friends.”

SEVEN REGIONAL TITLES

Holford also excelled with Barbados, leading the nation to seven regional titles as captain between 1972 and 1977.

Following his playing career, Holford was also a successful administrator, becoming the first chief executive of the West Indies Players Association (WIPA).

Current WIPA president and chief executive Wavell Hinds praised Holford as a “true gentleman and statesman”.

“It is with deep sadness that we learnt of Mr Holford’s passing,” the former Test left-hander said.

“He was a true gentleman and statesman of the game and West Indies cricket. His contribution as WIPA’s first CEO left pillars on which our organisation currently operates.

“May his family and friends find peace and strength at this sensitive time, and may he rest in peace.”
