While hoping to make the national senior women’s squad for the upcoming Concacaf Women’s Championship in Mexico, national midfielder Drew Spence secured her immediate club future with a move to London rivals Tottenham Hotspur

Spence, 29, who left Chelsea after a decade-long stay, was unveiled at the North London club yesterday and signed a two-year deal that will keep her at the club until 2024, with an option for an additional year. Spence’s move will see her join national teammate and goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer, who has been with the club since 2019.

Spence described the move as a “new chapter” in her career and is looking forward to helping the team continue its improvement atop the ranks of English football.

“I’ve seen how much the team has progressed over the past few seasons, challenging teams at the top, so it’s the right move for me and somewhere I can bring all my experience,” Spence told the club website. “I know how to win titles. I know what it’s like to be in a dressing room where there is a winning mentality every day and, hopefully, that’s something I can bring here.”

Spence has amassed 11 major trophies during her time with Chelsea, the only club she has ever played for. She finished her Chelsea career last season with a Women’s Super League (WSL) and FA Cup double and became the club’s longest-serving player with 238 appearances.

Spurs head coach Rehanne Skinner says that Spence’s championship pedigree will be vital for a team looking to reach the next level.

“Drew is a fantastic addition to the squad we are building. Her achievements in the WSL have been significant, having been involved in the league since the start in 2011. She brings a huge amount of experience and understanding of winning, having been a part of 11 trophy-winning teams,” Skinner told the club’s website. “As a midfielder, Drew is creative, tenacious and capable of unlocking defences in a number of ways, and will be an asset to the team.”

Spurs finished fifth in the table last season, their highest-ever finish since promotion in 2019.

Spence is among the 26-member Reggae Girlz squad currently in a training camp in Colorado as the team prepares for the final round of Women’s World Cup qualifiers next month. The squad will be trimmed to 23 by interim head coach Lorne Donaldson.
