Golfers tee off in aid of child diabetes

OVER 48 golfers across four formats teed up at the Caymanas Golf and Country Club yesterday for the Kiwanis Club of New Kingston Charity Golf Tournament, which helped to raise over $2 million to fight child diabetes.

With this year’s theme dubbed ‘Taking a swing at childhood diabetes’, president of the Kiwanis Club of New Kingston, Jhenell Allen, says this year’s tournament superseded expectations and the respective beneficiaries will be greatly impacted.

“The proceeds from this golf tournament will support the renovation of the Child Development Unit at the Comprehensive Health Clinic. We will be doing a storybook on diabetes and we will be providing two grants to children who are living with Type One diabetes and are advocates in their own right,” Allen stated.

Tournament director Dave Reid was also pleased that the golfers were able to come out and support the initiative.

“It was a fairly decent turnout this time of the year, with bird bush just finishing, plus there was another tournament on the North Coast,” Reid shared. “But, all in all, the golfers enjoyed it despite the course playing a little tough due to all the rain we had, and the rough was a bit higher than normal.”

OVERALL TITLE

In the meantime, Sewing Jang carded two birdies to secure the overall title, following his Stableford score of 38. Aubyn Ferguson secured the Men’s senior title over Dr Andre Foote, following a better back nine.

Susan White also had a birdie on hole number 10, which helped her to chalk up a score of 35 to win the Ladies’ title. Dianne Hudson came in second and Jennifer Mendes third.

The golf tournament, which is the 18th project conceptualised by the Kiwanis Club of New Kingston, also featured a fashion show and a sip-and-paint session at the Caymanas Golf clubhouse.
