Olympic Gardens, Mile Gully square off in JWPL feature
The crosszone fixtures of the Jamaica Women’s Premier League (JWPL) come to an end this afternoon with Zone A second-place Olympic Gardens opposing Zone B third-place Mile Gully in the feature game at Brooks Park starting at 3 p.m.
Mile Gully are coming off a 2-1 win over Baptiste Alliance, while Olympic’s last game ended in a 3-1 defeat to Cavalier.
Mile Gully have won two of their last three games and are riding high on confidence, but manager Lorraine Cassanova anticipates a very tough game.
“We see this game as one of the tough ones, like when we play Vere or Cavalier which were difficult teams and we think this one will be just as difficult.
“However, we are in the right mindset going into the game. We just need to make sure we stick to our game plan and try to execute,” she said.
Cassanova said they would attempt to keep Olympic Gardens off the scoresheet and make the most of their opportunities.
“We will try not to concede and see how best we can score. Our confidence has definitely grown and having a nice pep talk should get them up for the game as mentally they are there already,” she said.
Mile Gully’s hopes will rest mainly on Peta Gay Dixon and Megan Sanchez. They are on 12 points, the same as Vere, but sit six points adrift of Cavalier in first.
Olympic Gardens were weakened by injuries to several players for their previous match against Cavalier, but manager Michael Peart said a few players have recovered and will be going to Mandeville for the win.
“We haven’t really seen Mile Gully. We don’t know anything about them. But going off results, they are improving.
“Our injury situation has improved a little. We have back two of the regular starters so we should be a little stronger,” he said.
“It has reached the stage of the competition where you have to try and garner some points so we want nothing less than three points.”
Olympic Gardens, with 12 points, are second in Zone A behind Frazsiers Whip who have 21 points.
