Gritty batting performances by both the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) and Melbourne CC saw the army men securing first-innings honours in their opening-round Jamaica Cricket Association Senior Cup encounter, which ended in a draw at Up Park Camp yesterday.

Resuming the second day on 311 for five, the home side, JDF, managed to add another 43 runs to their score as they were dismissed for 354, with Andre Fowler getting 57. Part-time off-spinner Andre McCarthy put in a player-of-the-match performance by bagging five wickets for 35 runs, with leg-spinner Abhijai Mansingh picking up two wickets for 88 runs.

Melbourne CC in reply also posted a formidable score as they were dismissed for 332 with United States batsman Steven Taylor top-scoring with 83, with captain Javelle Glenn chipping in with 69 and Sadique Henry getting 67 against three wickets for Dennis Bulli.

Over at Maxfield Oval, Kingston CC got off to a winning start following an innings and 109 runs victory over Kingston and St Andrew Cricket Association (KSACA).

After Kingston piled up 410 for five declared, KSACA were then dismissed for 173 and following on could only manage to get to 128 all out.

National spinner Patrick Harty and Akim Fraser were once again the chief destroyers, bagging four and three wickets, respectively.

Over at Nelson Oval, Mico University College were able to secure first innings from hosts Lucas, who batted out the final day to secure a draw.

Mico, replying to Lucas’ 154 all out, posted 290 for nine declared, with O’Neil Roberts getting 102 and Antwin Stephens 58 against Kavel Reid, who picked up four for 79.

Batting a second time, Lucas reached 164 for four, with opener Nicholas Lewis getting 85.
