GOLD CUP runner-up RUNAWAY ALGO goes for his second overnight-allowance win in five months today, dropping two classes after a brave run in the Mouttet Mile when last out December 3.

The United States-bred speedster was MAHOGANY’s main aggressor in the Mouttet Mile, pressing the Gold Cup winner into the lane, forcing a pace which collapsed to the closers’ liking inside the final furlong.

Given almost three months off, RUNAWAY ALGO has topweight 126lb but benefits from conditions which allow him to return among overnight-allowance runners, a level he has twice beaten since April last year.

When let loose on the lead, RUNAWAY ALGO runs rivals into the ground, his last victory being a mockery of ONEOFAKIND in the Ron Ron Trophy at seven and a half furlongs, clocking 1:30.4

After RUNAWAY ALGO’s win in the Ron Ron, it took CALCULUS all day to wear him down at nine furlongs and 25 yards in open allowance. RUNAWAY ALGO franked that run in his next race, being the only horse, ATOMICA included, who got anywhere close to MAHOGANY in the Gold Cup, finishing two and a half lengths behind the fearsome sprinter-stayer.

Clearly out of class, RUNAWAY ALGO has no speed to contend with in overnight-allowance company, making him a lonely leader with a patient rider, Linton Steadman, who broke his drought aboard CURLIN’S NOON on Wednesday.
