Reid the latest Jamaican to join the University of Oregon

World Under-20 200 metres bronze medallist Alana Reid’s collegiate future has been confirmed as she is the latest Jamaican to take her talents to the University of Oregon.
Reid’s commitment was confirmed yesterday by the team’s social media page, joining the 2023 recruiting class. She will join Calabar High’s Kobe Lawrence this fall after completing her final season with Hydel High.
Reid is the latest Hydel athlete to determine her collegiate future as team captain and reigning 400m hurdles champion Oneika McAnnuff made her commitment to the University of Kentucky.
Reid has been performing well so far in her final season at Hydel as she currently has the third-fastest time in the girls’ Class One 100m, an 11.39-second clocking which won her the title and set a new record at the recently concluded Central Athletics Championships, pipping Edwin Allen High’s Serena Cole in the process. Only Mount Alvernia High’s Carleta Bernard (11.34) and Petersfield High’s Alexis James (11.24) have run faster this season. Reid clocked a wind-assisted 22.93 in the 200m at the Central Championship to win the sprint double.
Last season Reid placed second in the Class Two final at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships but won the 200m Class Two title.
Reid capped her 2022 season with bronze in the 200m final at the World Under-20 championships in Cali, Colombia, in a personal best time of 22.95. Her teammate Brianna Lyston won the title in 22.65.
World 4x100m silver medallist Kemba Nelson is one of the most notable Jamaican athletes that have attended the University of Oregon. Reid will join student athlete Xavier Narine who is currently in his junior year at the institution.
