Harbour View earn point with late penalty

Christojaye Daley scored with the last kick of the game to earn Harbour View a fortunate point in their Jamaica Premier League (JPL) match against Tivoli Gardens at the Ashenheim Stadium, Jamaica College yesterday. The game ended in a 2-2 draw.

Barrington Pryce fired Tivoli in front from the penalty spot after seven minutes of play but Timar Lewis equalised for Harbour View in the 24th minute.

Pryce got his and Tivoli’s second in the 71st minute when he redirected a free kick from Alton Lewis. However, Harbour View pushed for the equaliser and were rewarded in added time when Nicholas Clarke brought down Garth Stewart in the box and Daley calmly slotted home from the penalty spot.

Although disappointed, Harbour View coach Ludlow Bernard said it was a good point for his team, especially with the frontrunners dropping points yesterday.

“I thought we started the game too nonchalant and too flat. We drew with this team, and this team is on a six-game winless streak and yet we allowed them to score because of carelessness.

“But we are still grateful for the point. We will take it and move on. We just have to remember the good things we did to get back and just maintain our concentration,” Bernard said.

“Every point is good, because others around us are dropping points. So it is a good point for us, as we still want to get to the top.”

Although he admits it is two points lost, he noted that they are still in a very good position.

“We have to look at this game as a blip and move on. With 10 minutes left, I still thought we had a fighting chance and we managed to get a (penalty) call similar to what they got in the early part of the game.

“But some of the attitudes (of players) for this game will not be accepted for the next game. There is no room for complacency,” he stated.

After coming so close to their first win in six matches, Tivoli coach Jermaine Johnson said a draw was hard for his team to take on the day.

“It is very hard to take, and you could tell by the players’ reactions. But we took a point and it was a good game for us. So we just have to take the positives.

Clarke, the west Kingston-based team’s goalkeeper, was injured most of the second half but Johnson said he had more faith in Clarke’s experience than in an inexperienced Jahiem Orr.

Harbour View remain in fourth with 33 points while Tivoli climbed one place to 10th with 19 points.
