Maggotty relishing top ten finish

Class Three 800 metres champion Jayden Brown and Class Two 800m winner Yoshane Bowen are delighted they have been able to put Maggotty High on the map at this year’s ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships.

Maggotty finished in the top 10 with 46 points, an improvement from their 17 last year. Their improved performance was due mainly to the two boys who took home the medals for the team.

Brown also got silver in the Class three 1500m and got his big prize in the Class Three 800m final, a victory that even he was unsure of attaining.

“I was not confident. I thought that I would come second or so. I was surprised that I came first,” Brown said.

It was an even bigger surprise to him of the season that his school has been experiencing, basking in the improvement that the programme has made in the middle distances

“I am very surprised. Last year we finished with 17 points overall and this year we passed that points total by a huge margin. So I am very surprised and happy with the school and with the athletes,” Brown said.

Bowen was lost for words as he tried to put their achievements into context. Bowen finished third in the Class Two 1500m final and like his teammate refused to settle for less as he stormed towards victory in the Class Two 800m final.

For him, there was no secret to their success. They had put in the work necessary for them to enjoy their success.

“We just put in the hard work every day and just to try and maintain the top three on the ranking system at all times,” Bowen said.

Maggotty’s 46 points were helped by other athletes picking up points in their respective finals. Bowen said he believes the school will be proud of their achievements, especially going back with championship medals.

“Last year was just one gold medal, now it’s two. We are going home with four medals this year,” Bowen said proudly.
