Knight wins 400m hurdles at Bermuda meet
ANDRENETTE KNIGHT showed good form at yesterday’s Bermuda Grand Prix to capture the women’s 400 metres hurdles event in 54.90 seconds.
Her win was the only individual victory for a Jamaican female at the United States Track and Field World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meet. Cassandra Tate of the United States was second in 55.06 with Jamaicans Shian Salmon and Rhonda Whyte placing third and fourth, respectively. Both were given the same time, 55.56.
Jamaica also won the 4x100m as the quartet of Remona Burchell, Ashanti Moore, Shashalee Forbes, and Jonielle Smith won the event in 42.80 seconds, ahead of USA Red (42.83) and USA Blue (42.87).
On a day that saw the athletes benefiting from a strong following wind, both Forbes and Danielle Williams had second-place finishes in their respective events.
Forbes, who has been in great form this season, raced to 10.98 seconds in the 100 metres as Tamari Davis of the United States won in 10.91.
In the section two of the women’s 100m, Burchell took second in 11.15 as Shannon Ray of the United States won in 11.04. The athletes were aided by a positive wind of 2. 7 metres per second.
Aided by a plus 3.5 metres per second wind, Williams had a second-place finish in the 100m hurdle in 12.38 seconds, with Megan Tapper taking fourth in 12.47. Jasmine Camacho Quinn of Puerto Rico won in 12.17.
Candice McLeod was third in the 400m after clocking 52. 30 seconds. Gabby Scott of Puerto Rico won in 51.65 ahead of American Courtney Okolo (52.23).
Rising sprinter Ackeem Blake continued his build-up for what is expected to be a great season after a third-place finish in the men’s 100m in 9.87 seconds. American Christian Coleman (9.78) and Noah Lyles (9.80) took the first two places. The athletes were pushed by a 4.4 metres per second wind.
In the B final of the men’s 100m, Jamaicans Kadrian Goldson and Michael Campbell took the first two places. Goldson won in 9.96, with Campbell second in 10.11. The wind was a positive 3.8 metres per second.
Tyler Mason and Javon Francis had to settle for fourth in their events. Mason clocked 13.39 seconds in the 110m hurdles, which was aided by a positive wind of 4.0m per second. Jamal Brett of the United States won in 12.99. Francis had a 45.81 seconds clocking in the 400m as Steven Gardiner of the Bahamas won in 44.42.
The quartet of Damion Thomas, Goldson, Jhevaughn Whyte, and Campbell clocked 39.51 seconds for third in the 4x100m as the USA Red won in 38 21 ahead of the USA Blue, 38.31.
